Fishing is fun for kids of all ages. Catching fish is even more fun. Big or small, bass or catfish-catching a fish of any kind can be fun for everyone. When you go, try to go to a small body of water that is well stocked. This way you are sure to catch something… trout, carp,catfish, crappie and bluegill are some of the easier targets.

You need some tackle! You can't catch the fish without the fishin' pole (and a few other items.) Any store that sells adult tackle should have some to fit your hands, also. Rod and reel combinations are the best way to go for the younger kids. And take a tackle box with hooks, weights, bobbers and bait.

Okay, what to use for bait? Well, if you are trying to catch some crappie or bluegill, you may want to use minnows or tiny bits of night crawlers. Catfish also like night crawlers, but they eat hot-dogs and corn, too. The most important tool is the bobber. Watch the fish nibble as your bobber starts bobbing and when your bobber goes under -- it's time to hook that fish.

Are you ready to go? Gather your supplies and get your mom or dad rounded up. Don't forget your tackle box, bait, rod and reel. If you want to practice casting, head to your backyard with a casting plug or weight on the end of your fishing line. Cast until you think you are ready to try it for real. Then gather those supplies and get to the water. Be sue to check with your state fish and game department to see if you need a fishing license,

Safety! Safety! Safety! Hooks are very sharp! Be sure to handle the hooks carefully and look out for others before you make each cast. Life jackets should be worn when near the water. And don't forget sunscreen and insect repellent.

Catching those fish! So what are you supposed to do with the fish now that you've caught it? Sometimes people like to keep the crappie or catfish for dinner. Check with your parents to see if they want to keep the fish.If you do keep them for dinner, use a basket or a stringer in the water to hold the fish until you are ready to leave. The best thing to do with any fish you catch is to set them free. Practicing catch and release allows the fish to grow bigger and you to come back and have fun catching them over and over again.

Let's go fishing again! Fishing is meant to be fun. Have a good time, watch the bobber and enjoy being outdoors. Oh yeah… and catch fish! Practicing catch and release helps to ensure there will be fish to catch every time you return. If you really like fishing and practice a lot, maybe someday you will be fishing at tournaments! Hey Parents-This is a great way to spend time with your little ones. Going fishing together makes a kid feel important. Be sure to help them out at the water's edge with casting, monitoring the bait, setting the hook, reeling 'em in and setting the fish free. Your kids will have a more successful trip and a lot more fun if you fish with them. If you don't know where to go, ask at your local tackle store or your state wildlife and parks department. If you don't know how to fish, take a friend to help both of you. And have fun!
